Shenhua Ning Coal and SABIC Cooperate with Coal to Olefin Project Signed

From the perspective of China's domestic industrial structure, there is a relative shortage of high-end varieties in the downstream new chemical materials and fine chemicals fields. Therefore, Shenhua Ning Coal will consider the development of fine chemicals as an important direction to further optimize the industrial structure and promote industrial upgrading in the future. This led to the international cooperation with Saudi Basic Chemical Industry Company to build a set of MTO and fine chemical projects.

As of 2015, Shenhua Ningmei Modern Coal Chemical Base has built 6 large-scale modern coal chemical projects, including 250000 tons/year methanol, 210000 tons/year dimethyl ether, 600000 tons/year methanol, 500000 tons/year coal-based olefin, 60000 tons/year polyoxymethylene, and 500000 tons/year methanol-to-olefin. The production capacity of the base is 2.52 million tons of methanol, 1 million tons of polypropylene, 368000 tons of mixed aromatics, 81200 tons of LPG, 60000 tons of polyoxymethylene and 210000 tons of dimethyl ether.

500000 tons/year coal-based olefin (MTP) project started in October 2007 and qualified polypropylene products were produced in December 2010. This project is the world's first large-scale coal chemical project that uses coal as raw material to produce polypropylene plastics through coal gasification to methanol, methanol conversion to propylene, and propylene polymerization process routes. The gasification unit adopts Siemens GSP dry pulverized coal gasification process technology, the MTP unit adopts Lushi process technology, and the PP unit adopts Lumms patented technology.

500000 tons/year methanol to olefin project started construction in March 2011, and the installation reached full capacity production in September 2014. The project produces polypropylene plastics through methanol conversion to olefins and olefin polymerization process routes. The project's methanol-to-olefin technology uses Lutchi's MTP process technology and the polypropylene process uses the Lumms process.

In addition to the 6 major projects that have been completed, Shenhua Ningmei Modern Coal Chemical Base is also under construction with 3 projects of 4 million tons/year coal indirect liquefaction, comprehensive utilization of coal slime, and deep processing and comprehensive utilization of coal chemical by-products. Among them, the 4 million tons/year indirect coal liquefaction demonstration project was approved by the National Development and Reform Commission on September 18, 2013, and the construction was fully started on September 28. It is planned that the coal-to-oil line A will be put into trial run in September 2016, the coal-to-oil line B will be put into trial run in April 2017, and it will enter commercial operation in October 2017.
